Clean People Overview

Clean People is a San Francisco-based, eco-friendly household cleaner company. Besides laundry detergent strips, they also offer kitchen cleaning products like dish soap, as well as a variety of kind laundry products like a bleach-free stain remover.

Key Features

Clean People's laundry strips are spongy squares of concentrated laundry detergent made from biodegradable, plant-based ingredients. Clean People laundry detergent sheets work in hot or cold water as well as regular and high-efficiency machines.

Because Clean People has a wider variety of cleaning products than other detergent sheet companies, they can also offer value pack options. For example, the Detergent & Dryer Sheets kit is a 96-load box of detergent sheets and a box of fabric softener dryer sheets for $46.

Pros

  • Discounts for subscribers and value bulk packs
  • Laundry detergent sheets come in 100% plastic-free packaging
  • Pre-measured perforated sheets
  • Dissolves completely in hot or cold water
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Plants a tree for every 96-load box sold

Cons

  • Stain removal not as effective as other detergents
  • May have to pay more for the clean you want
  • More expensive than other laundry detergent sheet brands
  • Uses plastic packaging in other products
  • Free shipping and returns only available for North America

Customer Reviews

Overall, customer reviews for Clean People are very positive. Customers seem particularly pleased with their lightweight packaging and how gentle their formula is for people with sensitive skin, which was my experience as well. Many attest to getting their laundry clean, although some reviews mention that the strips weren't very effective on whites or heavily stained laundry.

The main complaints seem to be that Clean People laundry detergent sheets are still not as cost-effective as other detergents or that they didn't get the full 32 loads out of one pack. Although most customers seemed pleased with the Fresh Scent, a few other reviewers experienced a strong chemical smell like I had.

Bottom Line

For someone looking to get a lot of their cleaning-supply shopping done in one place, I can definitely see the benefit of Clean People laundry detergent sheets. The wide variety of products and value pack deals make it easy to combine products to get the soft, clean laundry you're looking for. That said, when other companies can provide those benefits in just their regular formula, it becomes difficult to justify the higher cost of Clean People products.

Earth Breeze Overview

Earth Breeze was founded in 2019 with headquarters in Oregon. To reduce the excessive plastic waste produced by the laundry industry, Earth Breeze laundry sheets were designed by three friends with the goal of making high-quality, low-waste laundry detergent.

Key Features

Earth Breeze laundry sheets are also spongy sheets of concentrated laundry soap that dissolve completely in both hot or cold water to offer the same dissolubility as liquid laundry detergent but without the excess water or bulky plastic packaging. Like many eco-friendly laundry detergents, Earth Breeze sheets are made from plant-based ingredients and formulated for sensitive skin.

Earth Breeze also partners with 800+ organizations to donate 10 loads of laundry to one person in need for every pack of laundry sheets purchased, and their entire supply chain is carbon neutral.

Pros

  • Compostable packaging
  • Vegan and animal-friendly formula without harsh chemicals
  • Dissolves completely, even in cold water
  • Hypoallergenic and gentle on skin
  • Travel-friendly
  • Affordable flexible subscription options and free shipping

Cons

  • Delivered wrapped in plastic (when ordered from Amazon)
  • Paper packaging is easily breakable
  • Not as tough on harsh stains
  • Strips are not pre-cut
  • You may need to use more to get the clean you want
  • For someone looking for scent, they may feel disappointed

Customer Reviews

Similar to Clean People, there are a lot of positive reviews for Earth Breeze. Many customers report feeling happy with the flexible subscription options and attest that Earth Breeze laundry sheets perform pretty well on average loads of laundry.

Although their laundry strips dissolved perfectly in my experience, some reviewers mentioned sticky, white residue left on their clothes or laundry drums. I can’t know for sure what caused the residue for these consumers, but I generally recommend placing laundry sheets directly on the laundry drum before inserting your clothes for the best results. Customers also mentioned that the “60-load” measurement felt inaccurate, as many needed to use a full sheet, even for medium-sized loads, in order to get clean laundry.

Bottom Line

Earth Breeze is a decent eco-friendly laundry detergent. The packaging is biodegradable (but flimsy), and their cruelty-free laundry detergent is formulated for sensitive skin and uses all vegan ingredients. With flexible subscription options and free shipping globally, they are also one of the most affordable laundry detergent sheets on the market.

However, you have to separate each sheet yourself without the help of perforation, which can be inconvenient and inconsistent, and considering the mild cleaning power, you may end up using a full sheet and spending more per load than you expected.

Clean People vs. Earth Breeze: Who Wins?

Cleaning Power

  • Clean People: 2.5/5 stars
  • Earth Breeze: 3.5/5 stars

In my experience, both Clean People and Earth Breeze laundry detergent sheets dissolved completely in hot and cold water and worked well in all washing machines. Both detergent sheets left our clothes looking bright and clean after a wash cycle.

I tested both products on napkins stained with tomato sauce, olive oil, and wine—all stains that my Italian family often faces. Not only did Earth Breeze laundry detergent sheets work on average stains, but they also did a noticeably better job pulling out those tough stains.

Conversely, Clean People was less effective than I had hoped, even on average stains. So, although Earth Breeze sheets are not perfect in terms of cleaning power (and I’ve found better sheets for this), I would still rate them higher than Clean People.

Environmental Impact

  • Clean People: 3.5/5 stars
  • Earth Breeze: 4/5 starts

Clean People and Earth Breeze both make a significant impact on reducing plastic waste, water waste, and carbon emissions within the laundry industry by cutting down packaging and replacing liquid detergent with laundry sheets. Each company also does their part to give back through eco-conscious initiatives like planting trees and 1% for the Planet.

However, both Earth Breeze and Clean People use poorer packaging than other eco-friendly detergent sheet brands. Earth Breeze was delivered to me wrapped in plastic, which was likely because I ordered from Amazon instead of straight from their website. Even still, the paper envelope tore so easily that I can’t see it holding up, even on my laundry shelf.

On the other hand, while the packaging for Clean People's laundry sheets is recyclable cardboard, some of their other products still come in recycled plastic packaging. Also, Clean People’s box of sheets is packaged in yet another box, which feels wasteful.

Ingredients and Formulas

  • Clean People: 4/5 stars
  • Earth Breeze: 5/5 stars

In terms of gentleness, both of these sheets performed really well. We were happy with how soft and gentle our clothes felt on our skin after using both of these sheets. We also appreciated that both formulas are hypoallergenic, vegan, cruelty-free, and made from plant-based, biodegradable ingredients.

That said, Earth Breeze's formula is dermatologist-tested, while Clean People does not claim to be, although their sheets are formulated for sensitive skin and accordingly, did not irritate my rash-prone skin. Additionally, I felt that Clean People's fresh scent had an almost chemical smell that was overpowering for someone like me who has allergies. As a result, I would rate Earth Breeze a little higher on gentleness.

Cost-Effectiveness

  • Clean People: 3/5 stars
  • Earth Breeze: 4.5/5 stars

Although I have already mentioned that Earth Breeze laundry detergent is more cost-effective than Clean People, I thought it might be helpful to go into a little more detail about the per-load cost options.

Both companies offer subscription options that can be adjusted. For Clean People, you can order from every one to three months, whereas Earth Breeze offers every one to four months. With Clean People, you can save 15% by subscribing, while with Earth Breeze, you can save as much as 40%.

Clean People also offers bulk-load options that reduce the per-load cost. For example, although a 32-load box is $0.40 per load with a subscription, a 96-load box is only $0.29 per load with a subscription. Nevertheless, Earth Breeze sheets are still only $0.25 per load with a subscription.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that all of these numbers assume that you will divide your sheets in half for each load. While that is not only somewhat inconvenient to do with Earth Breeze's non-perforated sheets, considering the cleaning performance of either of these brands, you may end up using a full sheet for more loads than you expected and, in turn, spending a bit more than you had anticipated.

Convenience

  • Clean People: 4.5/5 stars
  • Earth Breeze: 4.5/5 stars

Laundry detergent sheets are, almost as a general rule, more convenient than bulky liquid detergents. Detergent sheets tend to come in slim, travel-friendly packaging, are pre-measured, and you don't have to worry about making a sticky mess. However, there are small differences in the level of convenience between different brands depending on factors like packaging, availability, and compatibility.

As far as availability, both Clean People and Earth Breeze are available on Amazon, but the subscription discounts that both of these companies offer are an incentive to order directly from their websites. However, if you do want to buy from a store, Earth Breeze has a convenient store locator page.

In terms of packaging, Clean People's packaging is sturdier and easy to open and close, and their sheets are perforated, unlike Earth Breeze laundry sheets, so you can effortlessly divide them depending on load size. Clean People’s box is bulkier for storage, however. Because of this, I rated both brands evenly.

Why We Recommend HeySunday Instead

This last point is one of the main reasons why HeySunday laundry detergent sheets have consistently solidified their spot as the best laundry detergent sheets for me and my mom. Not only are HeySunday's sheets a competitive $0.23 per load for subscribers, but they are already pre-divided and pack a powerful enough formula that you can trust one sheet will do the job on medium-sized loads and two for heavily stained fabrics.

After spending weeks researching the ingredients in numerous laundry detergents, I can tell you that the formula for HeySunday's detergent sheets is on par with leading brands like Tru Earth and Earth Breeze in terms of clean ingredients. They’ve eliminated excess packaging with their slim envelope, cutting down on environmental waste. Plus, the sheets are incredibly gentle on my sensitive skin without sacrificing cleaning performance.

Those are the reasons that HeySunday is the best laundry detergent sheet brand for us, but I hope that the information I've shared can help you find a product that brings a little extra joy to your laundry day.

Clean People vs. Earth Breeze Final Thoughts

To wrap it up, similar to my Tru Earth vs. Earth Breeze review, Earth Breeze once again came out on top of Clean People on my personal grading scale. While I respect both companies and appreciate their commitment to eco-friendliness, Earth Breeze won out in cleaning, convenience, and cost.

I believe as long as we're making the switch to more environmentally friendly laundry detergent, it's a big step in making our homes feel clean from the inside out and doing what we can to work toward a happier, healthier planet. Happy shopping!
